Recipients must be of sound moral character and in need of financial assistance. Sophomore and junior applicants may have no grade below a "C" and must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Eligible students must have declared a major or minor in agriculture.
This award is given to one recruited freshman and one upperclassman. The Agriculture Club awards this scholarship for high academic achievement. William Meyer, a decision was made to sell the herd and use the money to endow this scholarship. Since 1952, the Agriculture Club maintained a small beef herd. Thereafter, the student must complete the fall term with at least 12 credit hours and a 2.7 GPA to renew for the subsequent spring semester. The recipient will initially receive the award for one semester. In awarding this scholarship, priority should be given to students who (1) are underrepresented in the Southeast student population or (2) have overcome obstacles such as socioeconomic disadvantage or (3) are first generation in their family to attend college. One letter of recommendation must accompany the application. The recipient must demonstrate academic achievement with a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA (HS or Transfer). This scholarship is awarded to an incoming student (freshman or transfer student) enrolled full-time at Southeast Missouri State University. The scholarship is intended to underscore this pivotal time in American history and highlight the meaning Southeast places on social justice and equity. The scholarship, as implemented at Southeast, reflects a broad range of interests to provide students who value and promote peaceful advocacy and inclusion with institutional recognition for their efforts. The scholarship underscores the University’s ongoing commitment to making Southeast Missouri State University a just and equitable institution. This scholarship reaffirms that Southeast Missouri State University remains deeply committed to providing a learning environment that promotes inclusion, equity, civility and a better way forward for every student. In light of the deaths in 2020 of Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky, and Ahmaud Arberyin in Brunswick, Georgia and Floyd, in addition to the 2014 death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and among others, the leadership of Southeast Missouri State University recognized there is still critical work to be done to address systemic issues and disparities in access and opportunity in our communities. After examination of the deep divide in this nation and the need for societal change during this historic time, the Scholarship for Advocacy, Equity and Justice was established to recognize those who champion justice and to acknowledge the far-reaching need for advocacy, equity and justice for all. In June 2020, Southeast President Carlos Vargas responded to a challenge from Scott Hagen, president of North Central University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to establish a privately funded scholarship at Southeast to mark this historic moment in our nation brought about by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020. Scholarship for Advocacy, Equity and Justice Recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. First preference shall be given to students from Dunklin, Stoddard, and New Madrid counties pursuing a degree in education or the fine arts. This scholarship was established to grant scholarships or other grants in aid to any student or students in attendance at Southeast Missouri State University. If no applicants meet this stipulation, this scholarship can be awarded to a student with financial need. The winner will be chosen by the chairperson of the Department of English. The Abernathy Scholarship is awarded each spring to a student who writes the best article, story, play, or poem with religious overtones. Abernathy's purpose for this award was to enrich religious thought through the discipline of literature. She won several awards for fiction and poetry throughout her life. Abernathy was a retired high school English teacher and social worker. This scholarship was established by Lea Abernathy, a 1935 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University.
