In June 2020, Southeast President Carlos Vargas responded to a challenge from Scott Hagen, president of North Central University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to establish a privately funded scholarship at Southeast to mark this historic moment in our nation brought about by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020. Scholarship for Advocacy, Equity and Justice Recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. First preference shall be given to students from Dunklin, Stoddard, and New Madrid counties pursuing a degree in education or the fine arts. Abernathy's purpose for this award was to enrich religious thought through the discipline of literature. She won several awards for fiction and poetry throughout her life.
